Also known as Condyloma, the genital wart is a sexually transmitted disease giving rise to wart shape bumps on the sexual organs. As the name suggests, genital warts are eruptions on the sex organs that are caused by transmitting of a virus during anal, vaginal or oral sex. Once the virus is passed, the bumps start appearing on the penis, in and around vagina or sometimes on the opening of the womb.

Most people who are infected by the genital wart virus are not even aware of it. This is because the virus is not strong enough to create any warts that can be seen on the surface of the penis. But in cases where the virus has a strong presence, it can be observed on the penile skin and passed from one body to another through skin contact during sexual activity.

In addition, rare possibilities of getting a genital wart by using an infected towel or from pregnant women to their babies also exist.

Prevention:

Experts have time and again stated that genital warts can be serious. In most cases they are painless but are definitely not appreciated on the sex organs or around them. Without a doubt, couples or individuals who are sexually active need to take more precautions than others to avoid genital warts altogether. In a few odd cases, women having a genital wart cervix eventually become prone to cancer.

As an ideal precautionary measure it is advisable to have a regular Pap smear test done by a clinical expert every six months on an average. This makes a person more secure, which is also beneficial to a great extent for the partner of that individual. The situation becomes all the more critical if one is pregnant and needs to be reported at the earliest. Using a condom while doing sex is not only an effective method of avoiding occurrence of genital warts but is also a good means of safe sex.

Cervical cancer may not be a prospective threat if you are not a chain smoker and believe in celibacy to some extent. Multiple sex partners, excessive smoking, sexual intercourse at an early age and a history of HIV infection are signs to be taken care of. A doctor can examine and trace any patches of genital warts by swabbing the skin with acetic acid. This results in formation of white patches on the defective skin.

Genital Wart Treatment:

Cyrotherapy is a good means of removing the warts by freezing them or by using a laser. However, you must realize that genital warts need to be distinguished from the warts that generally appear on the hands. Thus, using chemicals without any prescription can be dangerous for the genital skin.

Minor surgeries are a good option if the doctor has tried laser treatment and freezing. The duration of treatment depends on the degree and number of genital warts. If the virus is a relatively new entrant in the body then the treatment duration is comparatively less and otherwise it may take months to heal. If you have any queries in this regard then contact your doctor and avoid the build-up of these unwanted warts.

Even after the initial treatment is over, you cannot be sure that warts will not bother you again. This is due to the fact that the treatment only removes the genital warts, but does not remove the virus once you are exposed to it. The virus remains in the skin even after the treatment. It is therefore repeatedly recommended to use rubber condoms while doing sex, be it vaginal or anal.

What are the most common genital warts symptoms? Genital warts symptoms are similar to most sexually transmitted diseases. There are not many symptoms noticeable in genital warts. Half of people who have genital warts show no visible symptoms. Some individuals may have small hard spots visible to the eye which can develop within three weeks or months after exposure. Itching or burning around the sex organs can also be a genital wart symptom. Usually genital warts signs or symptoms consist of painless growths on damp or moist surfaces of the body beginning as tiny flesh colored spots.

These spots then develop into small bumps on the sex organs. Symptoms of genital warts can include bleeding or skin changes in or around the genitals. Difficulty in urination, localized discomfort, and pain are signs of genital warts. The most basic symptoms of genital warts are discharge, painless bumps, and itching for men and women. Some people do not show any symptoms or develop warts for many years after initial infection. Understanding the symptoms and signs of genital warts will allow you to recognize when it is time to seek medical help. Genital warts is a type of disease that can lead to other more deadly conditions. It is vital to get properly diagnosed and treated for genital warts.

The methods used to diagnose genital warts after an individual first notice the symptoms of the disease varies. One of the most common methods is a direct visual examination of the patient. A direct visual examination can be administered quickly in one doctor’s visit. Often to properly conduct a genital warts diagnosis vinegar is swabbed on the cervix or penis area that is possibly infected. Any HPV or human papilloma virus lesion will appear whitish when the vinegar is applied. A colposcopy is a painless examination where a lighted magnifying instrument is used to view the internal reproductive organs in women.

This is done at your local doctor’s office. Colposcopy allows doctors to take a more accurate evaluation of the infected area. Sometimes a biopsy of the cervical tissue is needed to give a proper diagnosis. This type of biopsy involves a sample of tissue from the cervix area to be taken for further examination. The sampled tissue is carefully looked at under a microscope. This process can also be called a culture. The laboratory’s microscopic analysis of the tissue can tell if a person has genital warts or another type of disease.

Suffering from genital warts is a condition that should not be ignored. Genital warts is one of the few sexually transmitted diseases that can turn into a terminal illness. Genital warts are caused by a virus called HPV or human papilloma virus. This virus comes in various strands which can lead to the development of cancer. The most common HPV or human papilloma virus which causes genital warts and opens a person’s body up to the possible growth of cancer are type 16, 18, 31, and 45. These types of human papilloma viruses create 80% of cancers.

It is the main cause of cervical cancer in women. Genital warts can easily turn into an annoying and embarrassing disease to a terminal one. Awareness of the dangers of untreated genital warts has been increasing in today’s society. The more you know about the importance of treating genital warts the more likely you are to protect yourself from allowing the disease to develop into something that can result in your death. Sexually transmitted diseases are not to be taken lightly. When it comes to genital warts it is important not to ignore the appearance of growths or warts. Taking the proper actions to treat genital warts is vital in the prevention of cancer.

There are various ways to treat genital warts. One of the most common genital warts treatments is topical solutions or creams. Topical solutions and creams are considered to be immune response modifier drugs. These creams work quickly to treat the infected and surrounding area of the skin tissue which has genital warts present. 5-Fluorouracil creams are often prescribed to treat genital warts. The most commonly used genital warts treatments that are topical solutions includes Aldara, Condylox, and 5-Fluorouracil creams.

Aldara cream is used to treat external and perianal warts. Aldara cream is considered to be one of the most effective and original treatments for genital warts. It aids the body in fighting the virus instead of simply getting rid of the warts. The method in which Aldara cream works is by treating the warts from the inside out. Condylox is another popular treatment for genital warts. Condylox was one of the first FDA approved solution in gel form to treat genital warts. Loaded with active ingredients that quickly combats genital warts. Condylox is an extremely effective genital warts treatment for external genital warts and perianal warts as well.

Since there is no cure for genital warts it is important to focus on treating genital warts to make them more comfortable to live with. There is little need to choose self-care at home since genital warts typically have no symptoms, but you do need to recognize that genital warts exist. When treating genital warts you should take the necessary precautions to avoid trauma to the area since this can result in bleeding. You should also make sure you don’t transmit the disease to your sexual partners. You should also avoid touching the warts since they are infectious, therefore do not squeeze or pick the warts.

Medical Options

While there is not specific treatment that can eliminate genital warts and prevent them from coming back, you can reduce the chance of blockage or complications by removing genital warts through medical options. However, genital warts may go away on their own after about three to four months in about ten to twenty percent of people.

One medical option is cryotherapy which freezes the warts using liquid nitrogen. This is an excellent first-line treatment for treating genital warts and the response rates are high with few side effects. Another option is electrodesiccation which uses an electric current to destroy the warts. This procedure can be done in the doctors office with local anesthesia, but the resulting smoke plume can be infectious.

The final medical option is laser treatment. This option for treating genital warts is often used when there is extensive or recurrent genital warts. The procedure sometimes requires local, regional or general anesthesia. A laser is used to physically destroy the wart. However, the disadvantages of this option are the high cost, increased healing time, scarring and potentially infectious viral particles that can be released into the air by the laser plume.

Surgery Options

Surgery can be used to cut away the warts and it is often done as an office procedure with local anesthesia. This option for treating genital warts is typically only used when they are small in size and number. This treatment technique has the highest success rate with the lowest recurrence rate. The success rates for this treatment method is 63 to 91 percent.

Outlook

Most of the time after treating genital warts they will come back even with a good initial response and in some cases the genital warts won’t even respond to treatment. Often the recurrence rates are over fifty percent within one year of treatment. Most of the recurrence has been linked to several factors including recurrent infection from sexual partner, a long incubation time of HPV, the persistence of the virus in the nearby skin, hair follicle or sites that missed treatment and lesions that are deep or undetected.

Genitals warts are one of those things that you simply do not speak of in public and likely don’t even think about unless your doctor brings up the subject. Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which just happens to be closely linked as the cause of many cases of cervical cancer as well as other types of cancer in the genitals. This virus is transmitted sexually so you have to have had direct sexual contact with someone infected and not everyone shows signs of genital warts.

It is so important to trade sexual histories with potential partners so as to avoid contracting any sexually transmitted disease (STD) like genital warts. In addition, protective sex with a condom is also paramount in avoiding the HPV virus. However, not everyone knows they have these warts and could inadvertently pass along the infection to you, so you should know the signs of genital warts in case they ever happen to you.

General Signs of Genital Warts

Typically, it could take as long as a month for signs of genital warts to appear after being exposed to HPV, although sometimes it may take much longer. Most genital warts are not painful, but they can produce an itchy sensation, especially when clothing rubs on them. Just like warts on a finger or toe, these genital warts could have a rough texture and cauliflower-like appearance. In addition, some warts have been completely flat while others may be almost invisible, only detectable by a doctor.

For men, signs of genital warts may occur in various places in the genital area such as the penis, urethra and rectum. In actuality, these warts could be inside the urethra or even underneath the foreskin of the penis. In females, signs of genital warts may appear near the rectum, near the urethra, inside the vagina or even on the lips of the vulva. In both men and women, other signs of genital warts include discolored swelling at the wart sites and even painful intercourse with or without abnormal bleeding.

The invisible warts may cause general itching which you may not attribute to genital warts because they may either look like an innocuous bump or just a small rough patch of skin. Therefore, only a doctor can truly determine whether or not you have the warts by conducting a skin test.

Treatment of Genital Warts

There are a number of both surgical and topical treatments for genital warts and while these won’t totally eradicate the virus that causes them, you can find some relief. You and your doctor together can determine the best course of treatment based on the signs of genital warts that you exhibit.

Genital warts are a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease, and they are caused by certain sub-types of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. Genital warts are the most obvious and easily recognized sign of HPV, and can be caused by a variety of different strands of the virus, although some people with the virus do not develop any genital warts at all.

Treatment

When it comes to the treatment of genital warts, there are a few different options available. Actually in the majority of genital wart cases they will end up going away on their own, but they can always recur and there is really no surefire way of ever knowing when they will disappear and reappear again.

Removing genital warts then is the only real way to treat this condition, and depending on the specific size and location of the warts, there are a few different genital warts removal methods that the doctor will select from.

Imiquimid is one of the most commonly used products for removing genital warts and it is better known under the Aldara name. It is a prescription medication that is used to treat quite a few different diseases of the skin in fact, and besides genital warts this includes skin cancer, some superficial malignant melanomas, and Bowen’s disease.

Trichloracetic acid is also very commonly used for removing genital warts, and although it is similar to Imiquimid it is also very different in many ways. It is more similar to liquid nitrogen, which is actually the most often used methods of all.

The liquid nitrogen that is used for removing genital warts is produced industrially in very large quantities by fractional distillation of liquid air. It basically works by causing instant frostbite on whatever surface it is applied to, especially when it comes in contact with living tissue, such as the skin.

Your doctor may use liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart, a treatment which is better known as cryotherapy. It will typically cause a little discomfort but little to no actual pain, and in order to be able to completely remove a wart, your doctor will most likely have to use this liquid nitrogen for several weeks in a row until improvement is noted. If there is no improvement noted, then they will probably decide to try out a different method of treatment and see if those results are any better.

The most important thing is that if you ever notice any genital warts on yourself that you get in to see your doctor as soon as possible and get the proper treatment for it. This is not only for your own safety but also for others’, so that if you are having sexual relations with other people you do not pass it on to them.

Pediatric genital warts have serious implications in the medical, social and legal aspects. In children with pediatric genital warts several issues must be addressed including possible sexual abuse, vertical transmission from the mother and the chance of future development of ano-genital malignancies. For families these issues can produce a lot of anxiety.

The Medical Aspect

It is very important to have proper diagnosis of pediatric genital warts. If for any reason you question your primary care providers diagnosis then you should obtain a second consultation with someone who has expertise in diagnosing pediatric genital warts, some of these individuals include a child abuse specialist, a pediatric dermatologist and a pediatric gynecologist.

If a child has pediatric genital warts then a complete medical examination is necessary, including an examination of the anus and genitalia for any other signs of possible sexual abuse. Doctors should also conduct an examination for oral warts. Any warts should be documented and photographed. It is also important that doctor test for other sexually transmitted diseases as well.

The Social Aspect

If pediatric genital warts are present then a complete psychosocial assessment will have to be obtained including a family tree that shows who is living in the home with the child. Experts should explore the familial social risk factors including drug or alcohol concerns, domestic violence, past or current involvement with CPS, mental health issues and a history of child abuse or neglect.

It will also be necessary to explore the possibility of any past or present concerns regarding sexual abuse of any family member with the parent or guardian, especially the child who has pediatric genital warts. Experts will also want to get a behavioral history of the child, particularly any incidents of acting out sexual behaviors.

The Legal Aspect

All professionals, including pediatric nurse practitioners, are under child abuse reporting laws that require them to report concerns of suspected child abuse to the responsible authorities. Child abuse reporting laws go above those of the professionals’ ethical responsibility to maintain their patients confidentiality. However, professionals are protected from criminal and civil liability when they report a suspected case of child abuse.

Because of the serious medical, social and legal implications of pediatric genital warts it is important that medical professional competently diagnose the condition in children, refer the child to an advocacy center or a child abuse specialist, understand the issues of child protection and properly report the suspected sexual abuse to proper authorities.

Male genital warts are probably the most stressful of the STDs. They are unsightly and they can be transmitted to other sexual partners by mere skin contact. You can prevent yourself from getting genital warts by following some precautions when having sex. If you already have male genital warts, you can treat them to make living with them a little more bearable. Just ask your doctor about your problem. Don’t be embarrassed. It may be easier to learn that genital warts are the most common STD around today. So, you’re not alone. There are other males going through the same thing you’re going through. The thing to keep in mind is that you should get yourself treated for your own peace of mind as well as the sexual health of all future sexual partners. And, if left untreated, male genital warts can cause more serious problems, such as cancer. So make sure you get treated as soon as possible by visiting your doctor.

How Is It Spread?

Male genital warts can be spread from direct physical contact with the skin. Male genital warts don’t have to be visible in order to be contagious. That’s what’s so important to learn. Male genital warts can be so small that they can’t be seen by the naked eye. You would need a microscope to see them. However, they may be there just the same and they can be contagious. The best way to prevent from spreading male genital warts is to use a condom each and every time you have sex. However, even condoms may not prevent the spread of the disease. That’s why it’s so important to get male genital warts treated if you do feel that you have them.

If you feel you have male genital warts, it’s imperative that you get checked out by your doctor immediately. Your doctor will be the one to determine if you do in fact have the disease. If you do, there are treatment options. You can have the warts burned off with a laser, or they can be frozen off by using liquid nitrogen. Either of these procedures may leave scarring, however slight, but they are great ways to get rid of the genital warts. There are also creams and other treatments that still may be in their trial phases. Ask your doctor about these because, while they may not work for everyone, they may work for you.

Just know that you’re not alone. Male genital warts effect many males. And it can lead to cancer if not treated effectively. So if you suspect that you have male genital warts, don’t waste another minute. Get yourself checked out so that you can get rid of this unsightly and embarrassing sexually transmitted disease once and for all.

If you think you have internal genital warts you will need to see a doctor. This is especially true if you have noticed you have genital warts on your body near your vagina if you are a woman, your penis if you are a man, and for both around your anus.

Being treated in the early stages of genital warts is vital because of human papilloma virus that is involved. This is a serious virus that is usually sexually transmitted and for both men and women can develop into cancer if it is left untreated.

Who Can Get Internal Genital Warts?

For women, internal genital warts can be inside the vagina. You may have felt a burning or an itching sensation inside and mistake it for a simple yeast infection. If treatment for a yeast infection doesn’t work, then it is almost certain you have internal genital warts. Women can also get internal genital warts in their anus. These may be mistaken for hemorrhoids at first, but as with a yeast infection, when conventional treatment doesn’t work, you will need to be examined further.

Men usually experience genital warts on their penis or under the foreskin if they are not circumcised. Internal genital warts can appear in their anus as well.

What Is the Next Step?

Once you have been to see a health care provider regarding your condition and you have been diagnosed with internal genital warts, you will be treated for the human papilloma virus. You will need to have a doctor remove your internal genital warts. You cannot treat them yourself with over the counter creams and lotions that claim to be genital wart removers.

Your doctor will need to do a surgical procedure such as LEEP. This procedure will be done once you have had a biopsy that confirms the presence of internal genital warts and an ASCUS reading that your health care provider will perform. Take heart if you have been diagnosed with internal genital warts that you are not alone and this condition is quite common.

What You Can Do to Prevent Genital Warts

The best way to avoid developing genital warts if you are involved with multiple sexual partners is to always practice safe sex. Using a latex condom when you are having intercourse is the best way to prevent contracting internal genital warts. If you are practicing oral sex, there are latex condoms that can be used on a female and use one on the man’s penis to ensure you are not going to contract any type of sexually transmitted diseases.

If you have noticed that there are some fleshy lumps around your genital area or your anus, you may have contracted the sexually transmitted disease of genital warts. Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus also known as HPV. There are many different types of HPV and genital warts are one of the ways in which it affects us.

How to Tell if You Have Genital Warts

It is important once you become sexually active to educate yourself about the various sexually transmitted diseases that you can contract, especially if you have multiple partners. The incubation period for genital warts is just one of the things that you need to think about when you decide you are ready to have sexual intercourse with your partner.

Most of the focus is on sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDs and Herpes, but because the HPV virus has different strains, it is best that you research this virus that can affect you in so many ways and not just during the incubation period for genital warts and beyond.

If you can see genital warts, then your health care provider can see them too. The incubation period for genital warts is generally two to four weeks and after that you may or may not begin to see signs and symptoms. You will be contagious, and highly so after the incubation period for genital warts is done. Some symptoms don’t show up for months, long after the incubation period for genital warts is over.

That is why it is so important, and for women especially, that they be checked regularly for the presence of the human papilloma virus. HPV is also a sign of a precancerous condition that can affect the cervix. If you have genital warts and you are a woman, often it will be detected when you have a pap smear. Your results will come up abnormal and your health care provider will want to do further testing.

There are many different treatment options depending upon the severity and the location of your genital warts. Your health care provider will work with you to map out an effective treatment plan that will help you to rid yourself of unsightly and itchy genital warts and help you to permanently rid your body of the human papilloma virus. You will need to be checked long after the incubation period for genital warts because even though the genital warts have long since disappeared, HPV may still be present.
